Match Play
One-on-one, hole by hole, for the length of the trip.
Players
2 players (head-to-head)
Best for
Two buddies with a season-long rivalry to settle.
The game
The oldest format in golf, stretched across a whole trip. Win a hole and you go one up; lose it, one down; halve it and nothing changes. The running "holes up" differential just keeps going — 3-up after round one is still 3-up on the first tee of round two. Go up by more holes than remain and you've clinched.
How to play
- 1Two players go head-to-head, hole by hole.
- 2Win a hole to go one up, lose it to go one down, halve it and nothing moves.
- 3The match runs trip-long: every hole of every contributing round, played in order.
- 4A hole counts only when both players have a score — if one sits a round out, the match simply pauses.
- 5Go up by more holes than remain and the match is clinched.
- 6Net play adjusts each hole for handicap strokes.
Variations
- Gross or net — toggle handicap strokes at setup.
- Provisional clinch vs. play-it-out — stop when it's decided, or settle every hole for a final margin.
In the app
ITL Links recomputes the match from every hole on every read, so a score you fix days later just reflows the result — no stored state to drift. Set it up on the trip and the holes-up number is always live.
